Born in 1986 in Augsburg (Germany), he began taking cello lessons as an eight-year-old. In 1995 he became a pupil of Eldar Issakadze, later continuing his studies with Thomas Grossenbacher in Zurich and David Geringas in Berlin. Since winning First Prize in the German Music Competition in 2005, he has appeared at the most important concert venues including the Zurich, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau, Heidelberg, Kissingen, Ludwigsburg, Verbier, Leipzig, Gstaad, Davos and Delft music festivals as well as performing at the Konzerthaus and Philharmonie Berlin, the KKL Lucerne, the Tonhalle in Zurich and the Gewandhaus in Leipzig.
He is a passionate chamber musician and performs with such artists like Christian Tetzlaff, Lisa Batiashvili, Francois Leleux, Mischa Maisky, Lynn Harrell, Milana Chernyavska or Paul Rivinius and he is a member of the Tecchler Trio, with whom he won several prizes at various competitions.
As a soloist he has performed with such orchestras including the Zurich Tonhalle-Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Niedersaechsisches Staatsorchester, the Wuerttemberg Philharmonic, the Vorarlberg Symphony, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen as well as the Southwest German, Wuerttemberg and Munich Chamber Orchestras.
His debut-CD including works for cello and piano had been published by the label GENUIN and has won the french „Classique-Info Ring“ prize. Another CD with romantic cello sonatas had been published, as well as releases of the world premiere recording of Yehudi Wyner’s cello concerto together with the Odense Symphony Orchestra by Bridge Records.
Future engagements include concerts as a soloist with the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo under Yakov Kreizberg and he will tour through Europe together with Anne-Sophie Mutter.
Maximilian Hornung is Principal Cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, whose musical director is Mariss Jansons, and he receives intensive support of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation. Since March 2010 he is an Exclusiv-Artist with Sony Classical and will release his first album in autumn 2010.
